The Germans first adopted Daylight Savings Time on May 1, 1916 in an effort to save fuel during World War I. Other European countries followed the German move of extending the use of daylight hours in order to save precious fuel that was greatly needed in the war efforts. The United States also jumped on the bandwagon, enacting the Standard Time Act of 1918 which instituted Daylight Savings Time in America. However, Congress abolished DST by the end of World War I. Some states continued to use Daylight Savings Time until the start of World War II when President Franklin Roosevelt reinstated the system. It was referred to as War Time, which lasted until September 1945.

Many American states continued the summer observance of DST until Congress enacted the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which mandated the establishment of four time zones in the country and provided for Daylight Savings Time during the summer months. In 1973, during the OPEC oil embargo, Congress tried to adopt a year-round DST but there was so much opposition that DST remained in use during summer only.

Benefits of Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time was adopted mainly for economic reasons: to save on fuel by utilizing the daylight hours for activities like farming and manufacturing. The long daytime hours also enabled people to be involved in outdoor activities, as there are more available hours before it gets dark. People enjoy the sunnier and warmer activities afforded by the extended daytime hours.

An Escape Back to Summer

Daylight Savings Time ends the first Sunday of November and people have to “fall back” to Standard Time. The daytime hours are shorter and people lose the extra hours for athletic and social activities, which they enjoyed during the warm and sunny summer months.
